THE 11plus EXAM IN BROMLEY

Information about the 11+ exam in Bromley.

The 11plus in Bromley.

There are only two grammar schools in the area of Bromley. Both schools currently use their own version of the Bromley 11+. The number of pupils wanting to enter these two schools is immense and demand for both of these schools is extremely high.

St Olave's Grammar School

St. Olave's has 124 places for boys at in 7 and these are very highly prized places. Demand is so high that potential pupils must first sit the School’s own Selective Eligibility Test (SET).

This is the first part of the process and has exams in English comprehension, Vverbal reasoning and non-verbal reasoning, Mathematics and more English questions. This initial exam helps the school to decide whether or not candidates are of the School’s required standard. Successful candidates then move forward to stage 2.

This all takes place in September and successful pupils are invited to sit the next 11+ exam at stage two.

The second stage takes place before the end of the Autumn term and has tests in English and Mathematics. The tests are extremely competitive, scores are standardised and then aggregated, together with the SET marks, to allow a ranking of candidates.

Quite simply the first 124 boys, in rank order, are offered places. With demand so high other criteria may be used such as In the event of scores being tied for two or more candidates the final rank order will be determined using performance in the Mathematics paper, then, if required, the creative writing, then the English multiple choice, then the SET.

Newstead Wood School

Newstead Wood is the second Grammar school in Bromley. It is a Girls’ Selective School and the school is always heavily over-subscribed.

The  school has 160 places in Year 7. Very often there will be 5 applications for each place so expect competition to be very high. As the school is heavily over-subscribed the school apply other criteria after considering scores in the selection test:-

The Selection Test consists of papers in Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning set by a nationally recognised body. Where necessary the Non-Verbal Reasoning paper will be used to differentiate between applicants on the same overall score.

Girls who have been ranked as one of the top scorers in the selection tests then:-

Applications will be considered in 3 groups:

Group 1 Girls who live within a 9 mile radius of the school.

Group 2 Girls of a member of Newstead Wood staff who has been employed at the school for two or more years at the time at which the application for admission is made and who live outside the 9 mile radius.

Group 3 Girls who do not meet the above conditions.

In practice, given the level of over-subscription to the School, no places have ever been offered to applicants from Group 3
